Common mistakes in Spanish: "hacer" un error
I'll start some short posts about errors which are very common for people beginning to learn Spanish. I say "short" because there's really not much to explain - the important thing is to point out the correct form:
Wrong: hacer un error
Correct: cometer un error
This particular mistake is common for English speakers who learn that "hacer" means "make / do" and therefore apply that to the English expression "make a mistake". Examples of correct usage:
Spanish
1. Has vuelto a cometer el mismo error.
2. ¿Cuántos errores cometí en el examen?
3. Intentaré no cometer ningún error.
4. Cada error que cometas en el examen te costará 10 puntos.
English
1. You've made the same mistake again.
2. How many mistakes did I make on the exam?
3. I'll try not to make any mistakes.
4. Every mistake that you make on the exam will cost you 10 points.
