Professions in the Spanish Language

The following is a list of some professions in both English and Spanish. There are a few things you should know in order to use this list properly:

Gender (male / female forms)

When the words listed below end in '..o/a' it means that you can make the female form by either substituting the 'o' for an 'a' (panadero - panadera) or adding the 'a' to the end (conductor - conductora).

Words ending in '-ista' don't change: 'el dentista' is a man and 'la dentista' is a woman.

Most words ending in 'e' don't change: 'un agente' is a man and 'una agente' is a woman.

Some words that look like they should change don't, possibly because they sound ugly in the Spanish language to native speakers. One common one is: 'el piloto' (a man) and 'la piloto' (a woman).

Words that end in 'a' keep the 'a' for both masculine and feminine. If you try to say a man is an 'artisto', you will get anything ranging from incomprehension all the way to a good laugh.

Like all vocabulary, some of these terms may differ from one Spanish-speaking country to another.

If you notice any professions which aren't on the list and would like to see them added, be sure to send us an email with your suggestions.
