Frequently Asked Questions
Q: When I going from English to Spanish in the exercises, why is the correct answer in Spanish shown with parentheses around the subject, such as (yo) ?
A: Because as we explain in the first topic about verbs in Spanish, it's not necessary to use the subject pronouns in the Spanish language. Try typing in your answers in the verb exercises without the subject pronoun, and you'll see that it will be counted as correct. The subject is presented as, for example, (yo) to reflect this.
Q: Why do I have to put the accents in the Spanish words in order for the answer to be counted as correct? Isn't this just nit-picking?
A: No, it isn't. The accents can change the meanings of the words completely. For example, hablo (I speak) and habló (he spoke) are very different words. Accents are very important in Spanish. It's important to differentiate between the subject pronouns too: tú (with an accent mark) means 'you' and tu (without the accent) means 'your'.
Q: When I'm doing the this / that exercises, for example, why is the answer counted wrong when I misspell one of the other words, even though it's almost right?
A: 'este caballo' = 'this horse' and 'este cabello' = 'this hair' - one letter gives two very different meanings. The program is just trying to help you, right from the beginning, to avoid making this kind of mistake in the future.
Q: Where are the speakers in the program from in the Sound part of the vocabulary?
A: From several Latin American countries and Spain. Care has been taken to choose speakers who don't have a strong regional accent. Their speech style would be understood in any Spanish speaking country.
