Games
Go to Braser Soft's Learn Spanish Home Page (www.braser.com)
The games included in Spanish Whiz are there in order to let you have some fun while working on your listening comprehension. Descriptions on how to use them are included below. Remember that you can keep track of your scores by going to Options in the Tools menu and selecting Keep a Log File. Please note that you have to finish all of the items in a game in order to record the score - no point stuffing allowed! Also note that as of version 8.1 you can change the total number of starting points and the log file will show both the result and the total number of points. If you run out of time, you get a "Game's over!" message and you have to start over.
Card Matching
This is a linguistic variation on the popular card-matching game. Click on a card, and you will see the word either in English or in Spanish, but you will hear it only in Spanish. Try to match the two as quickly as possible.
Scrambled
The letters of the Spanish words on the left are scrambled. Try to unscramble them in the equivalent box on the right. Here is how the game works:
1. To begin, click in one of the boxes on the right.
2. Type in the word from the scrambled letters on the left.
3. The word will be automatically checked when you type in the same number of letters as there are in the scrambled word.
4. The 'Cheat' button will give you one letter for a 7 point penalty.
5. If you really get stuck, clear what you have typed and click the 'Cheat' button repeatedly to see the answer.
6. Both time and correct answers count for the points.
What Did You Say?
'What did you say?' is a listening comprehension game. Click on 'Listen', and then on the English equivalent. Try to match them all as quickly as possible. It works like this:
1. Click on 'Listen', and then on the translation of the word you have heard.
2. If you miss one, click on 'Repeat'.
3. You can click on 'Repeat' as many times as you want for each word.
4. The penalty for clicking on the Pass button is 5 points.
Question-Answer
The Question-Answer game shows you a list of answers on the right. You have to listen to the question and choose the correct answer.
You will see a list of words on the right. If you want to just Practice listening to the words, make sure that the Practice button is the first one that you click on when starting. You will then see all of the words, and you can click on each one to hear it. To play the game:
1. Click on 'Listen' and you will hear a question.
2. If you want to hear it again, click on 'Repeat'. You can click on 'Repeat' as many times as you want for each word.
3. Click on the box which is the answer.
4. If you want to see the word being pronounced, you can click on the 'See' button - for a 10 point penalty.
5. You can see the translations of all of the questions by clicking on the 'QTran' button ( -20 points ) or all of the answers ('ATran' button, also -20 points).
Opposites
The Opposites game shows you a list of words on the right. You have to listen to the word being said and choose its opposite from that list.
You will see a list of words on the right. If you want to just Practice listening to the words, make sure that the Practice button is the first one that you click on when starting. You will then see all of the words, and you can click on each one to hear it. To play the game:
1. Click on 'Listen' and you will hear a word.
2. If you want to hear it again, click on 'Repeat'. You can click on 'Repeat' as many times as you want for each word.
3. Click on the word which has the opposite meaning.
4. If you want to see the word being pronounced, you can click on the 'See' button - for a 10 point penalty.
