   Chistes

The jokes are included so that you can relax from time to time and take a more light-hearted approach towards learning Spanish, as well as being an excellent way to learn in its own right.

You should carefully take note of the translations, because all of the jokes have been translated not literally (word for word) but rather to convey the meaning of the words as they would be expressed in English. This collection should serve you well as a starting point to see the rich variety of meanings a Spanish word or phrase may have in English, and also to appreciate the fact that literal translations seldom convey the full meaning of what is said in one language into another.

You'll find a number of jokes about people from a town called Lepe. In Spain the 'stupid person' type of joke usually refers to people from this town in the province of Huelva. Just to show you how really 'stupid' they are, they have capitalized on this fact and sponsor a yearly joke telling contest in the town which brings in lots of money.

Jokes based on sex, religion and race have not been included in this collection. We have tried to give you a selection of 'old favorites', the time-tested jokes which almost everyone in the Spanish-speaking world has heard at one time or another.
