Preterite (Simple Past)

Usage

The preterite (also called 'Simple Past' in English) is the past tense which describes actions in the past in a time frame which is finished. To understand this, you need to compare this tense with the Present Perfect which uses a time reference which is not yet finished. For example, the preterite in both English and Spanish uses phrases like yesterday (ayer), last week (la semana pasada), last year (el año pasado) which are time periods which are over and done with. The Present Perfect on the other hand uses expressions like today (hoy), this week (esta semana), or this year (este año) which are not yet finished.

Here are some examples of this contrast:

Preterite

I ate fish yesterday.
Comí pescado ayer.

I worked a lot last year.
Trabajé mucho el año pasado.

We saw a film last night.
Vimos una película anoche.

Present Perfect

I've eaten fish this week.
He comido pescado esta semana.

I've worked a lot this year.
He trabajado mucho este año.

We've seen a film today.
Hemos visto una película hoy.

Form

Endings for -AR verbs:

-é       -amos
-aste    -astéis
-ó       -aron


Example using 'hablar':

hablé       hablamos
hablaste    hablasteis
habló       hablaron


Endings for -ER and -IR verbs:

-í       -ímos
-iste    -isteis
-ió      -ieron


Examples 'comer' and 'vivir':

comí       comimos
comiste    comisteis
comió      comieron

viví       vivimos
viviste    vivisteis
vivió      vivieron


Irregular Verbs

As always, this system would be fairly easy to apply if it weren't for those pesky irregular verbs which all languages seem to love so much. The following is a list of the most common irregular verbs with their conjugations:

saber (know)
supe       supimos

poder (be able)
pude       pudimos

decir (say / tell)

hacer (do / make)

querer (want / love)

venir (come)

estar (be)
